Questions We Get a Lot

A first focal plane reticle scales with magnification, meaning your holdover marks stay accurate at any power setting — a major advantage for variable-range shooting or dialing on the fly. A second focal plane reticle is only accurate at one specific magnification, but tends to offer a cleaner sight picture at lower power. If you're shooting at multiple distances without stopping to adjust, FFP is generally the more versatile choice.

For most hunting applications — whitetail timber, elk country, open-range antelope — a variable scope in the 4-16x range covers nearly every shot you'll realistically take in the field. Long-range precision shooting benefits from higher magnification in the 6-24x or beyond range, where reading mirage and calling your shots becomes more critical. Choosing more magnification than your application demands can actually work against you in low-light or close-brush situations.

Parallax occurs when the reticle and the target image are not on the same focal plane inside the scope, causing point-of-aim to shift as your eye moves. Side parallax adjustment lets you eliminate that error without moving your head from the stock, which matters most at extended ranges or when shooting from unconventional positions. If you're shooting beyond 200 yards with any regularity, a scope with parallax adjustment gives you a meaningful accuracy advantage.

About Our Rifle Scopes

A rifle scope is the critical link between a shooter and a distant target — the piece of equipment that turns raw marksmanship into repeatable, field-proven accuracy. Whether you're glassing a ridgeline at dawn for elk, setting up for a long-range precision shot on the range, or putting meat on the table at unpredictable distances, the right optic changes what's possible. Key factors to evaluate include magnification range for your intended distance, reticle type and whether it scales with your power setting, objective lens size for light transmission in low-visibility conditions, tube diameter for elevation and windage adjustment range, and the quality of the glass itself. Parallax adjustment becomes important once shots push past moderate range. Serious hunters and precision shooters look for optics built to handle field abuse — temperature swings, recoil, and rough country — while maintaining a zero they can trust. The right scope is a long-term investment in accuracy, not an afterthought.
